Cox Goes Rather Too Far: Congress Shouldn’t Investigate CBS
In the past few days, it has become increasingly obvious that CBS used (badly) forged documents in a 60 Minutes hit piece on George Bush. Each day, its defenses seem to become weaker, and the attacks stronger. As John Stossel said in an interview last night, CBS has circled its wagons, only to find them on fire.
Now comes word that Congress may join the fray: Rep. Chris Cox has asked the House Telecom Subcommittee to launch an investigation into CBS’ reporting on this matter. As wrong as CBS was to run its story, it would be even more wrong for Congress to get involved. Simply put: the government should not be policing the media. No matter how sloppy, biased or irresponsible, Congress simply should not be telling the media what it can or can’t do. Or even “investigating” what it has done. That is the road to censorship.
Dan Rather and CBS will doubtless suffer tremendously for their outrageous conduct–because of investigations by other private media outlets (including blogs), with likely sanctions being loss of reputation and credibility. A congressional investigation is neither necessary nor welcome.

One thing that I think is obvious at this point is that CBS' lawyers are now seriously involved with, if not in total control of, this situation. That could become standard operating procedure if MSM fear a Congressional oversight every time they make an (honest) mistake.

As Mister James Gattuso writes "the government should not be policing the media", I can't help but think about the good ol' days (kidding!) when the PRAVDA from the former USSR was telling us (Westerners) that all is well behind the iron curtain. But I digress...the point I am struggling to make is that I agree but I believe it is too late to complain about it. Harm has already been done.
Our First Amendment has been conveniently forgotten. Rep. Cox asking for an investigation of CBS is laughable and idiotic at the very least. Media outfits, when not serving their audience with half-truths and unconfirmed "facts" do screw up constantly. Most of their mistakes seem to be honest ones as they're too caught up in the race for largest viewership in any given day. If CBS is to be investigated, so should CNN, FOX, ABC, NBC...
Politicians should not be interfering with matters of the media wether they like what they read/hear or not. It is serious business that only we, the People, should handle...at the voting booth.
